BioThrust ComfyCell vs. Other Bioreactors

ComfyCell

Homogeneous: CFD optimized laminar flow prevents all dead zones in the bioreactor and ensures cells experience gentle growth conditions.

Vertical Wheel

Homogeneous: Gentle fluid flow throughout the vessel means cells experience similiar growth conditions.

STR

Heterogeneous: High risk of dead zones and unequal flow mean cells will experience varying culture conditions.

Flask

Static: No hydrodynamic movement to support the cell culture. Limits scalability and nutrient exchange.

ComfyCell

Linear: Scalable from 300mL to 200L thanks to similar vessel geometry and identical, highly efficient membrane-based gas transfer mechanism.

Vertical Wheel

Complex: Only efficiently scalable from 80mL to 3L. Afterwards, very low gas transfer severely limits cell density and workarounds are needed.

STR

Complex: Efficient scalability stops once bubble aeration (sparging) is needed - usually between 2L and 10L.

Flask

Impossible: Flasks need to be scaled out and can't be scaled up, leading to major workload and quality concerns.

ComfyCell

Flexible: Either consistently low or consistently high, depending on what is needed for your process.

Vertical Wheel

Low: Only supports consistently low shear stress environments.

STR

Complex: Sparging creates inconsistent (i.e. harmful) high shear stress !

Flask

Static: No shear force due to 2D cell culture environment. Severely limits process intensity.

ComfyCell

Very high: Up to 10x the gas transfer rate (O2 in & CO2 out) at low shear force. Membrane aeration avoids all bubbles and foam formation regardless of bioreactor volume or process intensity.

Vertical Wheel

Very low: Small headspace area to vessel volume leads to minimal gas transfer. Problematic for efficient scale up.

STR

Variable: Headspace aeration limits gas transfer, sparging causes foam & damaging shear forces. Therefore, complex and high risk trade-off to achieve meaningful process scale.

Flask

Low: Static 2D culture is limited in gas transfer but easy to implement.

ComfyCell

Very Flexible: Can leverage in-situ perfusion, dip tubes, ATF, TFF, and more. Even combinations of several technologies are possible.

Vertical Wheel

Limited: Perfusion is available but oxygen supply generally limits cell culture before nutrient supply.

STR

Flexible: Can leverage dip tubes, ATF, TFF, and other perfusion technologies.

Flask

Limited: Specialized solutions exist but regular flasks have limited nutrient supply.
